No Dilation Needed? How the EIDON Ultra-Widefield Camera Protects Retinal Health in Provo, UT

A clear vision test is only one part of understanding your eye health. Many eye conditions begin in the retina, where changes can develop before they affect your sight. At Slate Canyon Eye Care, EIDON ultra-widefield retinal imaging helps us examine and document a broad view of the retina during comprehensive eye exams in Provo, UT.

In many cases, the EIDON camera can capture detailed retinal images without dilating drops. This provides a convenient way to evaluate internal eye health while creating images that can be compared during future appointments.

What Is EIDON Ultra-Widefield Retinal Imaging?

The EIDON is an advanced retinal camera that uses TrueColor confocal technology to produce sharp, high-contrast images. Its ultra-widefield optics can capture the central retina and extend into the peripheral retina, reaching up to a 200-degree panoramic view with its mosaic function.

The imaging process is quick and noninvasive. Patients look into the device while the camera captures digital pictures of the back of each eye. These images allow our eye doctor to review the retina, optic nerve, macula, and retinal blood vessels in greater detail.

Why Is the Peripheral Retina Important?

Traditional retinal photography may provide a limited view of the back of the eye. However, certain abnormalities can first appear outside the central retina. A wider image helps the doctor evaluate areas that may otherwise be more difficult to document.

Ultra-widefield retinal imaging may help identify or monitor signs associated with:

•          Diabetic retinal changes

•          Macular degeneration

•          Retinal holes, tears, or thinning

•          Changes involving retinal blood vessels

•          Optic nerve abnormalities

•          Other peripheral retinal concerns

Finding suspicious changes early may allow for closer monitoring, additional testing, or a timely referral to a retinal specialist.

Does EIDON Imaging Replace Eye Dilation?

The EIDON can work through pupils as small as 2.5 millimeters and often captures retinal images without dilation. This can reduce light sensitivity and blurry near vision caused by dilating drops, making it easier for many patients to return to their usual activities.

However, retinal imaging does not eliminate the need for dilation in every situation. Our eye doctor may still recommend a dilated examination based on your symptoms, medical history, risk factors, or imaging results. The two methods can complement each other when a more extensive evaluation is necessary.

Creating a Record of Your Retinal Health

EIDON imaging creates a digital baseline of your retina. During future eye exams, new images can be compared with earlier records to look for subtle changes over time. This is especially valuable for patients with diabetes, high blood pressure, high myopia, a family history of retinal disease, or previous retinal concerns.
